Lot Essay

In autumn 1824 Roberts travelled to France with his friend 'Jock' Wilson, visiting Dieppe, Rouen and Le Havre, and making sketches from which he painted four oil paintings for exhibition at the Society of British Artists in 1825: the Lady Chapel of St Jacques, Dieppe; the Entrance to St Maclou, Rouen; an exterior view of The South transept of Nôtre Dame Cathedral, Rouen; and West front of Nôtre Dame Cathedral, Rouen.
