Lot Essay

Matlock was one of the subjects chosen by de Wint for his first exhibition at the Royal Academy, 1807. He first visited the area in the previous year. He exhibited other watercolours of the subject at the Old Water-Colour Society throughout his life. We are grateful to Timothy Wilcox for suggesting a date of the circa 1840 for the present watercolour.
