Lot Essay

The present drawing is undated and the scene unidentified, but it probably belongs to the artist's middle years, when he regularly drew from nature in the summer months. It shows him continuing to find pleasure in the sunlit cornfields and wooded valleys that had inspired him and Palmer in the mid-1820s.
