Lot Essay

Originally constructed in 1560, the jetty at Yarmouth was used by a victorious Lord Nelson upon his return to England after the Battle of Copenhagen in 1801. Rebuilt in 1809, it has provided subject matter to a variety of artists including John Constable, whose paintings appeared as mezzotints between 1830-2, coinciding with the present drawing and possibly influencing the artist's choice of subject matter.
