A GROUP OF MEDALS OF BRITISH NAVAL INTEREST

Providing a fascinating insight into the life of England's most famous Admiral and his family life - The Nelson collection (lots 1-24) By repute, from a direct descendant of Josiah Nisbet - Admiral Lord Nelson's step-son, through the Thruston family of Talgarth Hall, Wales. The following diverse collection presents a selection of objects used during Nelson's life, by him and his immediate family. Ranging from personal items such as 18th century baby bonnets and cutlery engraved with Nelson's crest through to pieces relating to his illustrious military career such as the Derby cooler which commemorates one of his greatest battles, the Battle of Nile - probably presented to him to celebrate his naval triumphs, medals and the telescope used by his step-son, Josiah Nisbet. With a distinguished military career of his own, Nisbet is reported to have saved Nelson's life on at least one occasion. Nisbet's daughter married into the Thruston family of Talgarth Hall and some of the collection on offer stems from this branch of the family; offering a glimpse into the life of both Nelson and his descendants.

Comprising a Naval General Service, 1793-1840, two clasps, '23rd JUNE 1795' and 'COPENHAGEN 1801', edge engraved 'JOHN LONG.'; Alexander Davison medals (3), silver (officers), copper-gilt (petty officers, pierced with a suspension ring), and bronze (other ranks); Matthew Boulton medal, white metal, in watch-style glass with silver band engraved 'From M. Boulton to the Heroes of Trafalgar', with suspension loop; and a bronze Battle of Trafalgar, Nelson Memorial 1805 medal. (6)
