Boulaq is a district of Cairo on the east bank of the Nile. It was significant at the time of Bridgman's visit as the home of the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities, the first national institution of its kind in the Middle East. It was also the port from which tourists set off on their journeys up the Nile.
