Lot Essay
This figure forms part of the larger Commedia dell'Arte series by J.W. Lanz. It was modelled after the Meissen figure of Pantalone from the Duke of Weissenfels series, which was based on the engraving Habit de Pantalon Ancien by François Joullain, after Jacques Callot, which illustrated Luigi Riccoboni's Histoire du Théatre Italien published in Paris in 1728 (see page 8). The Frankenthaler Formenverzeichnis (model-register) mentions Pantalon hat einen Manel an (Pantalone is wearing a cloak) as no. 558.
