This figure is from the Jahrmarkt or Carnaval de Venise series, which was based on the spectacle of the annual fair which was held in the marketplace at Ludwigsburg.1 The fair was inaugurated by Duke Carl Eugen of Würtemberg, who after a visit to Venice in 1766-1767) was inspired to create an event with Venetian costumes. The 'Venezianische Messe' was a divertissement for the court, who all wore Venetian masks, and all the traders and customers also went in disguise and wore masks.
The largest collection of figures from the Venetian market was formerly in the collection of the Margraves and Grand Dukes of Baden, and it included allegorical and satirical figures as well as different tradesmen and their stalls. It was most probably originally a gift of Duke Carl Eugen of Württemberg to his neighbour, Damian August Philipp, Count Palatine of Limburg-Styrum and Prince-Bishop of Speyer, on the occasion of his inauguration in 1770.2
A similar figure is illstrated by Reinhard Jansen (ed.), Commedia dell'Arte, Fest der Komödianten, Keramische Kostbarkeiten aus den Museen der Welt, Stuttgart, 2001, p. 178, no. 186.
1. From 1777, it was also held in Stuttgart.
2. See Patricia Brattig (ed.), Lanz des Rokoko. Ludwigsburger Porzellan aus der Sammlung Jansen, Exhibition Catalogue, Museum für Angewandte Kunst Köln, 2008, Stuttgart, 2008, pp. 160-161.
Also see the similar figure from the collection of the Markgrafen und Grossherzöge von Baden, sold by Sotheby's, Baden-Baden, 5-21 October 1995, Vol. 3, lot 823.
