An ambiguous inscription on the reverse of the canvas suggests that the sitter might be Franz Pfyffer von Altishofen and that this work was in the possession of Francesco Corragioni d'Orelli, a doctor from Locarno, who had moved his family to Lucerne in 1706, where his descendants continued to exercise the medical profession throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
