Lot Essay
The model of this striding panther has been tentatively attributed to the Netherlandish mannerist sculptor Willem Danielsz van Tetrode (d. 1580), and when the present example was sold at Christie's in 1922 it was catalogued as 16th century. However, it is known that the bronze founder Giovanni Zoffoli - who specialised in producing small scale bronzes for people on the Grand Tour - also produced this model. In the list of items available for sale produced by Zoffoli in the mid 1790s there is included 'Notomia di Tigre' (Haskell and Penny, op. cit., p. 42). The casting of the present lot suggests that it probably did originate in Zoffoli's foundry.
