This delightful head of the young Bacchus is virtually identical to a marble bust attributed to Joseph Nollekens in Sizergh Castle, Cumbria. Although the Sizergh bust only has a traditional attribution to Nollekens, Roscoe notes in her entry on Nollekens (loc. cit.) that in circa 1800 he carved a bust of the Young Bacchus that is apparently unpublished and presently in a private collection.
