Lot Essay

The marble bust offered here is a near-identical replica of the bust by Antonio Canova executed in 1811, which was previously in the Palazzo Albrizzi, Venice (M. Praz L'opera completa del Canova, Milan, 1979, pl. 239) and is now in a private collection in Turin. Given the closeness of the present bust to Canova's prototype it would therefore seem likely that it was carved in his workshop sometime in the first quarter of the 19th century.
