The Rucellai family established themselves as wool dyers in 15th Century Florence and with their accrued wealth commissioned the building of the Palazzo Rucellai, designed by Leon Battista Alberti. Giovanni di Paolo or 'Giovanni I' was second only to Cosimo de'Medici as a patron of the arts.
