Lot Essay

George Smith painted relatively few still lifes, compared to landscapes. His still lifes depict everyday items that would be found in English homes, such as bread, butter, cheese and beer. They found great favour with his patrons and the Duchess of Northumberland purchased a still life with roast beef in 1765.
