Lot Essay

The waterworks, 25 miles from Liverpool, were constructed between 1850 and 1857. The present drawing must date from circa 1856-7. It is a study for Frederick Hulme's oil painting Rivington Valley, now in the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. The picture was published as a chromolithograph in 1857, the year in which the waterworks project was completed. A much larger oil version of the painting was commissioned in 1872 (Bolton Art Gallery).
