Lot Essay

The same model is illustrated in Moss Harris and Sons 1868-1968, London, 1968, p.63. A set of twelve sold Sotheby's, London, 22 November 2006, lot 201 (£55,000 ex premium). The design is a variation on the little-known 'Goloss Back' [i.e. guilloche back] pattern illustrated by Gillows in 1796 and 1797 (Estimate Sketch Book folios 1290 and 1383).
