La Tâche--Vintage 1985
Domaine de la Romanée-Conti
Levels: one 1 cm, two 1.5cm, one 3 cm, two 3.5cm. One Leroy strip label. Four wine stained, one bin-soiled and one scuffed labels. All slightly scuffed vintage tags. Three corroded capsules, one sign of old seepage. Offered in carton
First tasted at the Domaine, October 1990: deep, rich, intense, yet showing some maturity; extraordinary aroma, back to its brilliant self after the preceding dreary vintages, spreading and fluttering its wings like a bird after the rain. The sweetness of ripe grapes and alcohol, assertive, great length, dry finish. Six years later, from an American cellar, showing well. Most recently: beautiful in all respects. At its most gloriously fragrant best. Last noted at the closing dinner of Stephen Kaplan's 1985 vintage event in Chicago,
April 2000 ***** M.B.
