Stuart Sutcliffe
A rare five and a half page autograph letter, signed, on Bruno Koschmider Betriebe Tanzalst der fugend, Kaiserkeller, Hamburg... headed paper, [n.d. but Oct/Nov 1960] to an old girlfriend and fellow art student Susan Williams, the letter started by Sutcliffe whilst travelling on a bus and completed two days later at 4am, describes his frustration with his art ...I know full well the only thing is to keep at it. I have fully resigned myself to about a year away from art and expect to pay the consequences... Sutcliffe gives his opinion of the local girls ...The girls here are mostly quite beautiful and sophisticated and often anxious to please. I've been out with a few but become bored for lack of communication.. and recounts the expences involved in being a musician ...I've just had to buy a new amplifier for my guitar which is costing 120, I'm paying this weekly at 7 but unfortunately my boss won't sign the H.P. papers... and tells her how pleased he is that she's missing him ...I was beginning to think that the spell had broken...it took me such a long time to realise how good you were for me... telling her ..I believe we are going to Berlin after Xmas, but don't mention this to Cynthia yet in case John hasn't told her.... He mentions that his mother has recently moved to a larger house with a basement ...So I can't wait to get back and start being an artist again... and his impression of Hamburg ...Hamburg is the most beautiful city I've seen...the people are very beautiful and sophisticated and seem to possess an inate sense of beauty... he talks of his desire to start painting again ...know that I see so many things in my mind, things that only need [to be] made concrete and they would be good but I can't transpose them yet, must wait, after all I came away with full intention of forgetting painting for a few months... and adding ...One thing I'm sure about since I've been here. I hate brutality, there is so much in this area, that I'm afraid that sometimes I'll lose my temper in disgust, and then get hurt myself... finishing ...I don't think I'll be home before the end of February...don't forget to write...love Stuart; and corresponding envelope [frankmark indistinct]
