A bronze figure of Tara
Swat Valley, 7th/8th century
Seated in dhyanasana on a double-lotus base with broad petals, dressed in a diaphanous sanghati with the right hand in varadamudra and the left holding the stem of a lotus budding at the shoulder, the face flanked by large earrings and the hair piled in an ornate bun at the back of the head

The figure wears clothing that is distinctive for women in Kashmiri sculpture. It consists of a tight-fitting tunic with an inverted u-shaped hem and deeply pendant ends over a long dhoti, in this case finely pleated. For examples of other figures in this dress, see P.
