Lot Essay

An unusual heat-stamping process was used to create the carved effect in the wood of the binding. See Rauri Maclean's Victorian Publisher's Book-Bindings in Cloth and Leather, p.31, where he conjectures that this is the only binding known to have been produced by this process, and Maggs Brothers Ltd.
