Lot Essay

This work, though attributed by Block to Jane West, is attributed by both Summers and ESTC to Elizabeth Hervey née Marsh, William Beckford's half sister, who married May 5th, 1774, Thomas Hervey, a natural son of the Hon. Thomas Hervey and Lady Hanner. ESTCm records only one copy of the first edition, published the previous year, and 5 copies of the second (2 in the British Isles and 3 in North America, one of these lacking a volume).
