Decorated in gold hiramaki-e, takamaki-e and kirikane with two panels against a gyobu-nashiji ground, one depicting boats at a naval battle, one with the Minamoto warrior Yoshitsune on horseback galloping down a steep cliff towards the sea at Ichinotani, the compartments and risers nashiji, with a gold-lacquer bead ojime

The imagery on the inro refers to the battle of Ichinotani during the Genpei War of 1184 between the Taira and Minamoto clans, with the crest on the boat that of the Taira clan.
