Kim Kichang was born in Seoul and studied painting under Kim Eun-Ho (1892-1979). His work won first prize at the "Joseon" art exhibition in the late 1930s. Kim Kichang and his wife, Park Rae-Hyun (b. 1920), also a painter, exhibited together at the East-West Cultural Center in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1964, at the Obelisk Gallery in Washington, DC in 1965 and at the Allentown Art Museum in Pennsylvania in 1971.

In 1970, Kim Kichang had a one-person exhibition at the New York Cultural Center, and in 1971 he won the March 1st Cultural Award in Korea. He participated in the exhibition "France and Korea, Modern Art," sponsored by the French Cultural Center in Seoul in 1971. Kim also taught painting at Soo Do University in Seoul from 1972 to 1974.
