Lot Essay

In Entre deux Amours, a young mother sits clutching one child to her breast while another, Cupid, whispers tantalizing ideas in her ear. As always, Carrier-Belleuse's feats of execution were greatly admired, and the exhibition of the present work at the Salon in 1867 prompted one critic to comment: "Le ciseau a été partout d'une habileté extraordinaire; M. Carrier-Belleuse est incontestablement un practicien de premier ordre; il ne néglige aucun détail et se plaît à rendre dans toute leur gracieuse minutie les mille inflexions de la chair; il interprète la vie aussi près que possible et donne au marbre des frissonements d'epiderme" (M. du Camp, Salon de 1867, Paris, 1867).
