Adrien Etienne Gaudez (d.1902) entered the École des Beaux-Arts in 1862, where like Gustave Belard (d.1912), he was a pupil of the noted French sculptor, François Jouffroy (d.1882). He made his Salon debut two years later winning a bronze medal, and continued to exhibit his work publically thereafter, gaining an honourable mention in 1878, a bronze in 1879 and a silver medal in 1881. He won gold medals at the Exposition Universelle of 1889 and 1900. Several of his sculptures were acquired by the State and by the Municipality of Paris including a bronze version of the present sculpture, Lulli enfant, now at the Petit-Palais on the Champs-Elysees. The same model in plaster was exhibited at the Salon of 1885 (no. 3732) and at the Exposition Universelle of 1889. Many of Gaudez's sculptures were executed in bronze including a model by the founder Houdebine Bronzier, Paris, illustrated in H. Berman, Bronzes Sculptors & Founders 1800-1930, vol. III, Chicago, p.722, fig.2624.
