This commode is a 19th century variation of Joseph Stöckel's celebrated model commissioned by Marie-Antoinette in 1786. The original was subsequently purchased by the Crown and enlarged by Guillaume Benneman for the chambre de la Reine at St. Cloud. Most 19th century examples are faithful copies but here the cupboard door is enriched with marquetry instead of an ormolu-wreath mount.
Operating from large premises at 43, boulevard des Capucines from 1886, and on the place Vendôme after 1908, the firm of Boudet was one of the most important Parisian retailers of quality furniture, silver and bronze decorations. Boudet's stock included works by renowned furniture makers of the time, such as Zwiener, Linke and Millet, and sculptors including Isidore-Jules Bonheur, Carrier-Belleuse and the Comte du Passage. A pair of companion side-cabinets of this model by Boudet, but of smaller proportions and with glazed door fronts, sold Sotheby's, London, 6 October 2000, lot 77.
