The present lot is a faithful interpretation of a Neoclassical medallier secrétaire à abattant made by Georg Haupt. The original secrétaire was most probably commissioned by Baron Charles De Geer (1747-1805), a member of the prominent Swedish and Dutch family, for a collection of coins and medals started by his great uncle Charles De Geer (1660-1730). In 1888 Countess Charlotte von Platen (1813-1888), née De Geer, bequeathed the collection and the secrétaire to The Royal Swedish Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities. After ownership was transferred to The Royal Coin Cabinet, the secrétaire now resides at the Nationalmuseum, Stockholm.

Specialising in marquetry furniture of the Gustav III style, Gustaf L. Sahlholm is recorded as a carver and cabinet-maker at 21, David Bagares gata, Stockholm in 1906.
