Lot Essay

This rare and large mantel clock is inspired by Edmé Jean Gallien's Pendule à la Gloire du Roi, supplied for the Cabinet du Roi at Versailles in 1754. A 19th century copy of that model, cast by Graux-Marly Frères and 35 in. high, sold A Private Collection Volume II, Sotheby's, New York, lot 31 ($102,000). The present lot is larger and differs in being further embellished with seated bronze figures of nymphs.

Roblin et Fils Frères is recorded in Paris at Rue Vieille du Temple in 1860 and Rue des Filles du Calvaire by 1870. The firm exhibited at the 1867 Paris Exposition Universelle and continued until 1880-90.
