Harold S. Sniffen writes about the St. Johns: "the St. Johns steams from New York through inland waters to New Jersey. The Central Railroad of New Jersey was running this boat when the portrait was made in 1880, transporting commuters to and from Manhattan and vacationers to the New Jersey beaches. It may be headed for Sandy Hook, with passengers enjoying the cool Atlantic air" (Painted Ships on Painted Oceans, p. 120).
