Lot Essay

Ferdinand Richardt traveled to the United States in 1855 upon receiving a commission from William Vanderbilt (1821-1885) to paint Niagara Falls. During the ensuing four years, he painted over one hundred views of the falls and other famous American landmarks and landscapes, including the Mississippi River and Mammoth Cave.
