PROPERTY OF A LADY, REMOVED FROM AN APARTMENT IN EATON SQUARE (LOTS 265-291) The following lots were among the furnishing of an elegant apartment in Eaton Square, which capture the essence of an interior that comfortably juxtaposed Georgian pieces with French occasional furniture and Italian decorative objects. The interior was furnished mainly during the mid-20th century and in many ways echoes the fashionable ethos of the post war design legend, John Fowler, who described his intentions (for the Hunting Lodge in Odiham) as "..utterly unpretentious, very comfortable, with a veneer of elegance and informality". Each lot comes with its own history, and one in particular stands out, (lot 273), the rococo revival mirror, which once framed a portrait of Lady Amabel Yorke, Countess de Grey, formerly at Wrest Park, Bedforshire. The frame actually complimented the re-design of Wrest Park, re-built by the amateur architect, Thomas de Grey, 2nd Earl de Grey between 1834-39, in the fashionable French rococo manner. Thus, over the years, this Eaton Square apartment was flawlessly furnished both as a comfortable home and as a stylish backdrop for entertaining for more than half a century.
