A VERY FINE RUSSIAN GILT-BRASS HUNTING HANGER
BY SCHAFF & SONS, ST. PETERSBURG, SECOND HALF OF THE 19TH CENTURY
With etched watered steel spear-point double-edged blade of flattened diamond section struck on one side at the forte with the maker's stamp and signature, finely cast and chased hilt comprising oval guard with downturned shell decorated in high relief with a scene depicting St. Hubert and the stag in a wooded landscape, quillon-block decorated in low relief with two portrait masks including Diana with a bow beneath her chin, the quillons each formed as a recumbent lion, and grip involving a huntsman, his hounds and a stag surrounding the base of a tree with the pommel being formed of the entwined figures of a bear, a lion and a hound locked in combat, the whole retaining much original gilt finish, in original black-leather-covered scabbard with gilt-brass locket and chape each decorated with a panel of chased scrollwork against a stippled ground
