Converted from flintlock, with rebrowned twist sighted barrels signed in full and engraved with a spray of foliage on the Manton-type elevated rib, scroll engraved patent breeches each with pierced platinum plug, scroll engraved tang, flat locks each with intercepting sear, signed 'PURDEY'S PATENT' and engraved with sea monsters and scrollwork, well figured walnut half-stock with chequered grip and fore-end, raised cheek-piece, scroll engraved iron mounts including large reblued trigger-guard and scrolled grip-safety bar, the latter engraved 'PATENT', and silver escutcheon engraved with initials (chips to edge of fore-end, ramrod missing), London proof marks and barrelsmith's mark of Charles Lancaster

Lot Essay

Despite there being no visible serial numbers, this gun conforms to the type being produced by Purdey in the mid-1820s although the conversion to percussion was not carried out by the makers.
