A FINE CASED 40-BORE SINGLE-BARRELLED PERCUSSION SPORTING RIFLE
BY J. PURDEY, 314½ OXFORD STREET, LONDON, SERIAL NO. 1334 FOR 1827
With rebrowned twist barrel signed in full towards the breech, bead fore-sight, rear-sight of one standing and two folding leaves each with platinum-inlaid centre-line, border engraved recessed patent breech with two platinum-inlaid lines and platinum-lined slotted plug, border and scroll engraved tang and signed bolted lock, the latter with traces of original faded case-hardened finish, figured walnut half-stock with chequered grip and small extension, apparently original, raised cheek-piece, iron mounts including scroll engraved blued pistolgrip trigger-guard, and hinged patchbox-cover engraved with a vignette involving two hounds chasing a wild boar, silver escutcheon, and horn-tipped ramrod, London proof marks and barrelsmith's mark of James Purdey, in fitted mahogany case, probably original, lined in green baize with some accessories (sliding compartment lid missing), the lid with Purdey trade label, the exterior with circular brass escutcheon and flush-fitting brass carrying handle
