Lot Essay

Jules Antoine Duvaux regularly exhibited at the Salon de Paris throughout his life. Besides illustrations for numerous magazines, he made etchings with battle subjects and lithographs. He became especially successful as a battle painter, painting 'Battle of Waterloo' (1851), 'Battle of Valizy' (1853; Museum Bordeaux), 'Episode from the Siege of Sevastopol' (1857; Museum Versailles) and the 'Battle of Col de Mazat' (1870; Museum Bayonne) among others.
