A LATE SAFAVID OR AFSHARID CARVED AXE (TABARZIN) HEAD
IRAN, FIRST HALF 18TH CENTURY
Of typical form slightly flaring from the tubular shaft to the curved blade, each face carved with a panel of various animals within a gold meandering floral border, the shaft covered with a similar cartouche containing birds and a scrolling leaf, the hammer back also with birds and a floral spray, gilding rubbed, very slight corrosion
5¼in. (13.3cm.) long

This axe is carved very much after the style of Lutf 'Ali who signed a number of similar examples dated between 1735 and 1739 AD (A.S. Melikian-Chirvani, "The tabarzins of Lotf'ali", in R. Elgood, Islamic Arms and Armour, London, 1979, pp.116-135).
