SIGNED SADEQ, QAJAR IRAN, DATED AH 1176/1762-63 AD
Of rectangular form with hinged separate lid, the sides decorated with a series of long cusped cartouches filled with gul-o-bulbul design, the lid with a finely drawn hunting scene, the sides of the lid with gold floral illumination and the interior of with several cusped cartouches including one with a depiction of a youth, the underside plain red, the interior of the body painted in gold, the lid with small inscription in black nasta'liq reading, sadeq az luft-e 'ali ashraf shud and dated 1176, in overall good overall condition

Lot Essay

This qalamdan is signed sadeq az lutf-e 'ali ashraf shud, 'Sadeq was ennobled through the grace of 'Ali in AH 1176/1762-63 AD.'

This is a pun on the name of Muhammad Sadeq's teacher, 'Ali Ashraf. For a box signed by Sadeq using the same formulae, see R.W.Ferrier (ed.), The Arts of Persia, Yale, 1989, p.248.
