Intricately carved ivory veneered cabinets were very sought-after luxury items produced under Dutch patronage in 18th Century Sri Lanka. The intricately carved floral designs tended not to confirm to recognizable floral forms yet had a great sense of movement and flow in the carved work. For a discussion of Sri Lankan ivory veneered furniture from the 18th century see Amin Jaffer, Luxury Goods from India, London 2002, pp.68-69.
