PROVINCIAL MUGHAL INDIA, CIRCA 1740
Gouache heightened with gold on paper, a peri wearing gold illuminated robes and crown and a white div carrying an ankus sit atop a large elephant made up of a tightly packed composition of human and animal figures, considerable flaking to green ground, laid down between a minor border of nasta'liq in clouds reserved against gold ground, on wide blue margins with extremely elegant floral lattice, backed on card with later owner's stamps and marks on the reverse
Painting 7 1/8 x 5in. (17.9 x 12.8cm.); folio 15 7/8 x 10 7/8in. (40.2 x 27.3cm.)
