Lot Essay

An embroidery of slightly simplified but very similar design, and dated to the late 17th/early 18th century, was sold recently sold at Christie's, South Kensington, 27 April 2007, lot 818. Both also relate closely to one in the Textile Museum dated to the 18th century (1982.40.2, Sumru Belger Krody, Flowers of Silk and Gold. Four Centuries of Ottoman Embroidery, exhibition catalogue, Washington D.C., 2000, no.16, p.116). Another closely comparable embroidery, again dated to the 18th century, is in the Victoria and Albert Museum (Ottoman Embroidery, London, 2001, pl.23, pp.18 and 51).
