A METAL THREAD EMBROIDERED SILK LAMPAS TEXTILE ASSOCIATED WITH THE PROPHET'S TOMB IN MEDINA
OTTOMAN TURKEY, 17TH/18TH CENTURY
Of rectangular shape, the green silk lampas ground decorated with white, red and yellow cotton details heightened with metal-thread, with the shahada in elegant muhaqqaq woven into a interlocking chevron cartouche bounded on either side by further chevron bands containing Qur'anic inscriptions in naskh on a ground with further naskh inscriptions heightened with metal-thread, with two full repeats of this pattern and two incomplete repeats, sides of the textile hemmed

The inscriptions on this textile are as follows:

In one of the large zig-zags, allah muhammad, 'God, Muhammad'
In the smaller zig-zags above this is the call on God to bless the Four Rightly-Guided Caliphs and the Companions, radi allah 'an abi bakr wa 'umar wa 'uthman wa 'ali wa 'an al-sahaba ajma'in, 'God Bless Abu Bakr, 'Umar, 'Uthman, 'Ali and all the Companions'.
In the larger zig-zags above this, the shahada
In the small zig-zags above the shahada, Qur'an XXXIII, sura al-ahzab, v.56.

Another considerably smaller panel from the same textile as our own is in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum (inv. 39-1889). That panel was exhibited in the recent Hajj exhibition at the British Museum, (Hajj journey to the heart of Islam, exhibition catalogue, 2012, fig. 205, p. 262).
