This five compartmented box indicates its use as a man's ceremonial cosmetic box which would have contained sandalwood paste, vermilion, curds, honey and ghee which are the five sacred ingredients (Silver Mughal Magnificence, exhibition catalogue, Charleroi, 1987, cat.240, p. 160).
