On five feet, of flower-shaped form divided into heart-shaped compartments, each with hinged opening and bird finial, the central screw with a peacock atop a flower bud, the base engraved with a flower pattern, the base with old label
4¾in. (12cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

This five compartmented box indicates its use as a man's ceremonial cosmetic box which would have contained sandalwood paste, vermilion, curds, honey and ghee which are the five sacred ingredients (Silver Mughal Magnificence, exhibition catalogue, Charleroi, 1987, cat.240, p. 160).
