Opaque pigments and gold on paper, riding a galloping stallion, shooting two bears in the lower right hand side corners, on green background with very high horizon line, with black rules and red borders, the reverse with various inscriptions in devanagari script and old English inscription reading "original 18th cent. Mewar school", mounted, framed and glazed

Lot Essay

A series of paintings depicting Maharana Ari Singh hunting is published in Four Centuries of Rajput Paintings, exhibition catalogue, Milano, 2009, cat.48, 49, 50 and 51, pp.66-9. It is noted that in 1765, the maharana grew a beard and that these paintings, including the present example, must have been painted before this date.
