BRITISH NATIONAL ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION, 1901-1904 -- ROBERT FALCON SCOTT (1868-1912)
The Voyage of the 'Discovery'. London: Spottiswoode & Co., Ltd. for Smith, Elder & Co., 1905. 2 volumes, 8° (236 x 162mm). Half-titles, titles in red and black. 2 folding maps, loose in pockets at back, plates and maps, some double-page, or coloured. (One folding panorama loose and in pocket at rear of vol. I, scattered spotting heavier to beginning of vols.) Original blue cloth gilt, upper covers with gilt 'medallions' blocked in semi-relief, top edges gilt (extremities rubbed, spines slightly faded and lightly creased, 'medallions' lightly rubbed as usual, hinges splitting to vol. I, lower hinge splitting to vol. II). Provenance: Robert Falcon Scott (ink presentation inscription to half-title in vol. I dated 12th October 1905, to:) -- H.J. Miller.
FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED BY SCOTT TO THE NEW ZEALAND SHIPWRIGHT WHO CARRIED OUT REPAIRS TO THE 'DISCOVERY': 'Mr H.J. Miller with the compliments of the authorities of this expedition and the kindest remembrances of this author'. AN IMPORTANT ASSOCIATION COPY of Scott's account of his National Antarctic Expedition of 1901-1904, in which Scott describes Miller's chagrin at his failure to detect a leak in the Discovery while docked at Lyttelton, New Zealand (p.110). H.J. Miller was later to provide a similar service to Shackleton's Nimrod and Scott's Terra Nova. Conrad p.121; Rosove 286.A1a ('scarce'); Spence 1051; Taurus 41. (2)
