SIMON FONCECA
Sketches in India Chiefly from Nature. Madras: [1852-1853]. 12 parts (?of 16) in 1 volume, 4° (303 x 237mm). Lithographic wrapper title to part one as general title, and 44 lithographic plates (including costume subjects) by Dumphy after Fonceca, of which 32 are hand-coloured, leaf of introductory text dated (in manuscript) Madras, January 1852, 12 blank leaves (presumably the lower wrappers to each part?). (Plate 24 with marginal 130mm tear at gutter, occasional very light spotting.) Contemporary half calf over purple embossed cloth, spine gilt (extremities rubbed). Provenance: Eliza Fullerton (ink presentation inscription from her uncle 'Bob' dated 17 May 1854).
VERY RARE - ONLY THREE COPIES CAN BE TRACED IN INSTITUTIONAL LIBRARIES: British Library (lacking title and catalogued as [Lithographs of Scenery around Madras]), Bodleian, and National Art Library, V&A. Although the BL copy is defective, its cataloguing and that of the NAL copy suggest 16 parts were issued, but this has not been verified. NOT IN ABBEY, COLAS OR LIPPERHEIDE.
