MAJOR JOHN LUARD (1790-1875)
Views in India, Saint Helena, and Car Nicobar drawn from nature and on stone. [London: c.1832-38]. Small 2° (361 x 254 mm). Lithographic title and 60 hand-coloured lithographic plates, all but 6 on india paper, mounted, by and after Luard, the title printed by J. Graf, the plates by J. Graf & Seret or C. Hullmandel. (Light browning throughout, heavier to title, three plates with very short marginal tears, one plate with 60mm tear into caption, but without loss). Modern green leather. Provenance: Simpson (pencil inscription to title).

FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. An interesting and rare series of views and scenes with notes containing incidental information and comments on local customs, architecture, and military actions in India. Luard served as a captain in the 16th Light Dragoons from 1825 to 1832, when he moved to the 30th Foot. He retired as major in 1834, and obtained a brevet lieutenant-colonelcy in 1838. The imprint on the first 48 plates gives his rank as captain, with the remaining plates and title that of Major. It is possible that this promotion indicates a change in publication of the work: both the Herz copy (Christie's New York, 9 December 2009, lot 139) and the Travis copy (Sotheby's, 26 May, 2005, lot 188) had 48 plates only. Lipperheide Ld25; cf. Archer & Lightbown pp.142-143; Not in Abbey.
