PETRUS BERTIUS (1565-1629)
Carte de l'Afrique. [Paris: Melchior Tavernier, 1627 or later]. Double-page hand-coloured engraved map by Cornelis Danckerts (some nicks to margins, one corner clipped, fold strengthened on verso), 420 x 556mm.

FIRST STATE OF THIS RARE MAP which depicts the Nile after Ptolemy, but shows the Portuguese settlements on the Zambesi and the gold mines of Buro. While Bertius is cited as the source, it is clearly a copy of the Jodocus Hondius maps of 1619 and 1623, as is the 1624 Bertius map. Initially sold separately, it appeared in the five editions of Tavernier's Theatre Geographique issued between 1632 and 1643. Betz 63; Tooley p. 27.
