[12-Sheet Map of the 3 Counties of Jamaica] This Map of the County of Cornwell [and also Surry [sic] and Middlesex], in the Island of Jamaica, laid down from the Papers [of] Henry Moore, ... in the Years 1756, 57, 58, 59, 60 & 61. London: Daniel Fournier, 1763. 3 large 4-sheet folding hand-coloured engraved maps (each 990 x 1255mm), to the scale of 1.5 miles to one inch (1:95,040), with ornate dedicatory and scale of miles cartouches, explanatory keys identifying plantations with different types of mill, as well as type of crop produced (ginger, cotton, coffee, pimento, etc.), anchorages, roads, divisions of parishes, and military barracks, dissected and mounted on linen, small printed paper labels of each county to versos with similar mapseller's labels of W. Faden, 5 Charing Cross Road. (Light even browning, occasional light offsetting.) Each map contained in its original marbled-paper covered slipcase, contemporary ink manuscript labels to covers (lightly rubbed).

VERY RARE SET OF THE THREE MAPS COMPRISING THE FIRST DETAILED SURVEY OF THE WHOLE OF JAMAICA. Prepared by Thomas Craskell (chief engineer on the island) and James Simpson (chief surveyor) on the orders of Henry Moore, Lieutenant Governor of Jamaica, between 1756 1761, the maps were engraved by Daniel Fournier of London. Only seven copies can be traced in institutional holdings (BL, NLS, BnF, Madrid, LoC, JCB and Michigan); NO COPIES CAN BE TRACED AS SELLING AT AUCTION (ABPC/AE). (3)
