Chromolithographic title and additional chromolithographic title bound at end, titles printed in red and black, 51 plates after Jules Goury and Owen Jones, including 27 chromolithographic, 3 double-page and one folding plan. (Spotting, occasional soiling, some marginal clean tears.) Contemporary quarter black morocco (worn). Provenance: Dean Clough (Library stamp, Halifax).

FIRST EDITION. 'Jones's approach to colour printing was that of the precise architect with an eye for abstract design and the harmony of colours, an approach he carried further in his Grammar of Ornament, 1856'. The present copy is lacking vol. II but has the title page to vol. II and 12 plates not in very good condition from this second volume. Abbey Travel 156; Brunet III, 564.
