MICHEL ÉTIENNE TURGOT (1690-1751)
Plan de Paris. Paris: 1739. 2° (548 x 437mm). Double-page folding index map and large wall map on 20 numbered sheets on guards by Claude Lucas after Louis Bretez, decorative engraved border, sheets 18 and 19 joined and with title in cartouche. (Occasional light soiling or small spot, a few repairs at fold or margin without loss, tiny wormhole, final sheet lightly stained and repaired at margin just affecting edge of image.) Contemporary mottled calf tooled in gilt with fleur-de-lis roll border, corner and spine tools, arms of the city of Paris at centre, gilt edges (restored areas on upper cover, some scuffing and wear, rebacked preserving part of original backstrip).

A monumental, 'comprehensive and unique' map of Paris, celebrating that great city and providing a 'major record of the architecture and gardens' (Millard). It is not only highly decorative, but it remains a valuable documentary source of pre-Haussman Paris. Its bird's-eye perspective is oriented to the east to allow the portals of churches to be depicted. Berlin Kat. 2506; Cohen-de Ricci 807; Millard French 39.
